Five Beer Brewing Companies Near Me

Located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Transmitter Brewing is a must-visit for lovers of sours and fermented beer. They masterfully balance traditional styles with modern innovations.

In Bushwick, KCBC serves approachable lagers and hazy IPAs in their cute taproom. Their high-ceilinged space has plenty of indoor seating.

Other Half specializes in pastry stouts and creative sours, although their IPA selection is also excellent. This brewery is open for both to-go and growler sales.

Transmitter Brewing

Located down under the Pulaski Bridge in LIC, Transmitter Brewing brings a quirky, playful perspective to the area’s burgeoning craft beer scene. Co-founders Rob Kolb and Anthony Accardi came together as amateur road-bike racers in 2005 and found a shared passion for the kitchen, eventually settling on brewing because of the creative freedom it offers.

The duo now brews farmhouse ales, like F7 Sour Farmhouse and G4 Tart Golden Ale, in a converted auto garage in Queens. Their Brooklyn Navy Yard taproom, in Building 77, is a quieter option than the neighborhood’s crowded bars and sports-focused restaurants.

Evil Twin Brewing

Located near the Halsey L stop in Ridgewood, this brewery is a cool spot to go to with friends for drinks and vibes. They have a great selection of beer and also offer seltzers and wines. They have a huge greenhouse-like space with plenty of picnic tables.

A nomadic brewery based out of Denmark, Evil Twin contracts with over 10 other breweries to make limited-edition and one-off beers. Even More Jesus is a godly imperial stout with intense aromas of coffee, chocolate and dark fruits. It’s dark and rich with a menacing, dark brown espresso head.

SingleCut Brewing

The beautiful Holly Kay (pictured with a nitro pour of Keith SW4 Pale Ale) and I stopped in to SingleCut Brewing in Astoria, NY. The brewery is housed in a huge warehouse, where you’ll find large wooden tables and a gorgeous bar. They also have an impressive collection of vintage guitars, and the beer names and artwork are influenced by music.

I enjoyed their Weird & Gilly, a super juicy and drinkable IPA that balances mega and multiple tropical late-hopping with floral Szechuan peppercorns. It’s a great summer beer.

Alewife Brewing

The brewery is located in Sunnyside Queens, and offers outdoor seating as well as indoor booths lined up along the sidewalk. Its menu is diverse and includes a variety of ales and stouts. The bar also serves food from local food trucks.

The company was founded by Roz and Patrick Donagher in 2021. Their goal was to create an immigrant-run NYC brewery. They now have a small team and brew with high quality ingredients.

The brewery had planned to open in both Long Island City and Sunnyside but the COVID-19 pandemic hampered those plans. The company was forced to close its Long Island City brewpub and move the operation to Sunnyside.

Randolph Beer

Randolph Beer is a Brooklyn and NYC favorite known for their house-brewed beers and clean eats. They also offer bottomless brunch on the weekends. It includes mimosas, a selection of food options and the signature brunch punch for a set price.

This brewpub is the perfect spot to hang out with friends. Its onsite brewery offers a rotating menu of house brews and carefully selected local guest beers. Their swanky rooftop bar is open in the summer and is a great place to enjoy cocktails and view the city skyline.

LIC Beer Project

As Damon Oscarson and Dan Acosta walked us through their alluring 5,500-square-foot space, a mammoth 20-barrel brewhouse and towering fermenters immediately captured our attention. But they were more eager to show off another vessel, a coolship hidden in a small room and visible only through a pane of glass.

The brewery was the first in New York City to use the coolship technique, and is part of a revolutionary group of breweries that are using spontaneous fermentation as a conduit to modern-day innovation. One of the brewery’s most popular beers, Ardent Core, is a Belgian pale ale with a hint of lemon for zing.

Finback Brewing

Finback Brewery is a small craft brewery that uses creative ingredients and pushing the process to create unique beers. Their beer flavors include cinnamon, nutmeg, Schezuan peppercorn, ginger, chamomile, and ahtanum (which is apparently soylent green).

They have been brewing for three years and they are still two tanks away from capacity. Their beers are brewed with meticulous execution to produce beers that are both elegant and enjoyable.

They also take great pride in their local community and they use their business to promote social justice. One of their projects is called Breathing: Conversations, which encourages breweries to have conversations about race and then record those sentiments on the cans of their beers.

The Simplified Process of Beer Brewing

The Basics of the Beer Brewing Process

A craft brewer manipulates four basic ingredients in order to create unique styles from around the world. The brewing process may seem complicated and mysterious to outsiders, but it’s actually quite simple.

Basically, water is combined with cracked malt in a vessel called the mash tun and thanks to enzymes present, starches are broken down into sugars. It’s then boiled, cooled and yeast is added to eat the sugars.


Malting is the first step in transforming barley (or wheat, rye or corn) into beer. The grain is soaked and then sprouts, which activates enzymes that convert complex starches into sugars that yeast can turn into alcohol.

Then the sprouted grain is dried by kilning it. The kiln is constructed with perforated floors through which fans draw cool and hot air to control temperatures.


The brewer grinds the malted grain to prepare it for the mashing process. Mashing involves combining the grain with hot water to activate maltase and convert starches into sugars.

Milling the grain too course will prevent proper drainage of the mash tun, and milling it too fine may cause damaged husks to release tannins into the wort and beer. [3]

This step is essential to ensure a consistent product.


This is one of the most critical steps in the beer brewing process. The mashing step allows the natural enzymes in the malt to activate and convert starches into sugars that are then a “food source” for yeast during fermentation.

The brewer uses a variety of techniques to create a mashing program that will give the desired characteristics for a particular beer style. The choice of temperature is part of the brewer’s art.

Extract Separation

The brewer can choose from a number of temperatures during mashing. These choices are part of the art of brewing as different temperature levels affect how the malt enzymes break down the starches and convert them to sugars.

Adding the right amount of solvent to a separatory funnel is important. Too little and only one layer will form. Too much and the organic layer will be discarded.

Hop Addition

Brewers add hops for bitterness, flavor or aroma. The bitterness comes from alpha acids, while flavor and aroma come from volatile oils that are boiled off during the boil.

Aromatic additions are often made in the last few minutes of the boil or at flameout just before rapid chilling, allowing the compounds to survive. However, this limits the amount of isomerization that can take place.


The wort is boiled to sterilize it. Hops are added to the boil at different points to provide bitterness, flavor and aroma. They can be added early in the boil for bittering or at the end of the boil for flavor and aroma.

The wort is then filtered and cooled to a specific temperature. This enables the yeast to begin their work of converting sugars into alcohol.


Cooling is an important step in the beer brewing process. It prevents bacteria from growing and prepares the wort for fermentation.

There are many different methods for cooling wort, but most homebrewers start by submerging their carboy in an ice bath. More advanced breweries may use a glycol cooling system that uses cold water or food-grade ethylene glycol to chill their wort.


The fermentation stage is where the magic really happens. Yeast will eat the sugars in the wort and convert them into carbon dioxide and alcohol.

This happens at different temperatures, depending on the style of beer and the yeast used. This affects how fast the fermentation is, as well as the aromas and flavors that develop. This step can take days or months to complete.


When the beer is finished fermenting, it goes through a process known as conditioning. This involves storing the beer in specific temperature conditions for weeks (or months, depending on the style of beer) to mellow out and develop flavors and aromas.

The beer is then bottled, canned, or kegged for sale to customers. It may also be filtered and carbonated, depending on the style of beer.


When a beverage is carbonated, the pressure inside the bottle or can drops to match the air outside. This allows H2CO3 to convert back into CO2 and the effervescence that humans’ taste buds detect as carbonic acid.

Brewing beer seems complicated, but it can be broken down into four simple steps: mashing, separation, boiling, and fermentation. With a little practice, it can be done at home.

From wheats to blondes, stouts and IPAs, players follow recipes or explore on their own in a relaxing simulator. Compete in brewing competitions to build brewery reputation and unlock new equipment.

Brewmaster Mode

The game features a story mode and a sandbox Creative Mode, where users can experiment with recipes without any limitations. In the story mode players are guided through the basics of brewing, learning techniques and beer styles, and entering into friendly competitions to build brewer renown.

The player can purchase upgrades for their equipment and expand their brewing space, as well as customise the look of their label and name. The player is also able to use a full chemistry simulation to create their ideal brew, from hoppy IPAs to creamy stouts.

Brewmaster is a relaxing, enjoyable experience for anyone interested in learning about the craft of brewing.
